4 Ways To Waterproof Your Basement

Construction & Contractors Blog

Having your basement flood is absolutely no fun - especially if you have been using that space for storage or as extra rooms in your house. You can stop your basement from flooding by waterproofing it. Here are four ways to waterproof your basement to prevent flooding.

1. Ensure the ground around your basement slopes away from the house.

The first thing you need to do when waterproofing your basement is look at the ground outside of the house. If the ground slopes toward your house, you will likely find your basement flooded at some point in the future.

The way to correct this is to add fill dirt around your house that is high enough to give you a very good slope away from your house. This will ensure that any water will be drawn away from your home instead of towards it.

2. Inspect gutters and downspouts.

Another way to ensure your basement doesn't get flooded is to make sure your gutters and downspouts are cleaned regularly. When the gutters and downspouts become clogged with leaves and other debris, they stop diverting water away from your home. When this happens, the water can accumulate around the outside of your house and lead to your basement flooding.

In order to help prevent the flooding from happening, you should inspect and clean the gutters and downspouts at least once a month.

3. Repair any cracks in your basement walls.

If your basement has concrete or brick walls, you will want to make sure there are no cracks that can allow water to seep in. If you do find any cracks in the walls, you need to have them repaired as soon as possible. Not only can these cracks cause your basement to have flooding issues, but they could also cause more structural damage to your home if they are not fixed in a timely manner.

4. Apply a waterproofing agent to the walls.

Another great way to help prevent basement flooding is to apply a crystalline waterproofing agent to the basement walls. This is a product that you mix with water until it forms a paste and then you apply it to the basement walls. The waterproofing agent works by filling in the porous concrete so that it becomes a solid, which then blocks water from coming into the basement. However, it is important to note that this will only work for basement walls made out of concrete.
